Stephen Sondheim :: essays research papers

Stephen Sondheim - Biography Stephen Sondheim was born on 22 March 1930, the son of a wealthy New York dress manufacturer. But, when his parents divorced, his mother moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania and young Stephen found himself in the right place at the right time. A neighbour of his mother's, Oscar Hammerstein II, was working on a new musical called Oklahoma! and it didn't take long for the adolescent boy to realise that he, too, was intrigued by musical theatre. Although he subsequently studied composition with Milton Babbitt, he chose to apply what he learned he all-or-nothing commercial hothouse of Broadway. Like Hammerstein, he has written the occasional pop song (with Jule Styne for Tony Bennett) and dabbled in films (Stavisky, Reds, Dick Tracy), but, like Hammerstein, he has always come back to the theatre. His initial success came as a somewhat reluctant lyricist to Leonard Bernstein on West Side Story (1957) and Jule Styne on Gypsy (1959). Exciting and adventurous as those shows were in their day, and for all their enduring popularity, Sondheim's philosophy since is encapsulated in one of his song titles: "I Never Do Anything Twice". His first score as composer-lyricist was A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (1962) - a show so funny few people spotted how experimental it was: it's still the only successful musical farce. In the following three decades, critics detected a Sondheim style - a fondness for the harmonic language of Ravel and Debussy; a reliance on vamps and skewed harmonies to destabilise th e melody; a tendency to densely literate lyrics. But, all that said, it's the versatility that still impresses: you couldn't swap a song from the exuberantly explosive pit-band score of Anyone Can Whistle (1964) with one of the Orientally influenced musical scenes in Pacific Overtures (1976); you couldn't mistake the neurotic pop score of Company (1970) for the elegantly ever-waltzing A Little Night Music (1973). Sondheim hit his stride in the Seventies, forming a unique partnership of hyphenates with Hal Prince: a composer-lyricist and a producer-director working together to re-invent the musical. Some were plotless (Company), some characterless (Pacific Overtures), one went backwards (Merrily We Roll Along). But, as his onetime choreographer Michael Bennett put it, before you can break the rules, you have to know what they are - and Sondheim knows America's cultural heritage better then anybody. Backup and Restore DHCP Database

Having a DHCP database backup protects users from data loss in case the database gets corrupted or lost due to circumstances. Three backup methods may be used for DHCP database and are all supported by DHCPServer service:†¢ Synchronous backup – this backup occur automatically and happens every 60 minutes (default backup interval)†¢ Asynchronous backup – this is a manual backup. The user can use this backup by using the Backup command on the DHCP console. †¢ Windows Backup (ntbackup.exe) or non-Microsoft backup software The entire DHCP database is saved when the synchronous or asynchronous backup is used (Microsoft Corporation 2010). Restoring a DHCP database may be done by replacing the server database file Dhcp. mdb with a backup copy of the same file. The user may also get the database’s backup copy from the DHCP’s backup folder if the DHCP Manager is used. Restoration of the Dhcp. mdb file is also possible through the use of a tape backup or other backup media.All this procedures may be done if the user is a member of the Administrators group or has the proper authority to perform these tasks. Some points to remember when restoring a DHCP database are as follows (Microsoft Corporation 2010): †¢ Restore database backup from the same Windows Server version. If the backup is from a different version, migrate the DHCP database to the same version using the netsh export/import command.†¢ Restore database backup from the same language version.†¢ DHCP service is temporarily stopped when restoring a DHCP database.

The sales volume of 2016 was $109,880.00 and that of 2015 remained $107,500.00. Therefore, company took some effective decisions based on the sales volume of the various quarters of 2015 that led to an increase in sales in the fourth quarter of 2016. Blockbuster Case Study and its Failure in the context of Supply Chain Management Supply chain management (SCM) deals with the supervision of the information, materials and finances as the company moves in process from supplier to manufacturer to wholesaler, retailer and to the consumer. The process involves coordination and integration of these flows within and amongst companies (Qian et.al 2013). However, the ultimate focus of an effective supply chain management is to ensure reduction of inventory. Previously, after the release of a movie it would initially play in theatre and then be released on a videotape to be available in rental outlets or stores. Due to the high rental prices, initially most of the tapes would experience a drive towards the rental market. Eventually when the price dropped, the distributors would put the movie up for sale. This gave birth to Blockbuster Inc, a rental outfit. However, with the emergence of availability on movies on DVD things took a drastic change. In the present scenario, the DVDs for the retail as well as rental have a simultaneous release. This implies that Blockbuster must compete with the present market scenario to get a substantial hold. Moreover, the supply chain for the retail side is simple as DVDs goes through quality packing, picking and ship processes before they reach the shelves. Compared to this, there are additional steps involved in rentals that include printing an insert that is store specific, then placing the insert in the outer sleeve in a lockable case produced separately and then transferring the DVD from its original packing to the new case (Lo and Naraharisetti 2013). The entire process done under tight schedules so that they reach the store in a time that coincides with the release dates of the movies. Sometimes, Blockbuster faced difficulties in following the innumerable steps to keep up in the supply chain and maintain pace with its competitors. Moreover, the volatility of demand gave blockbuster additional challenges in terms of labor supply. Although the company tried to solve the problem with temporary workers but it eventually its cost increased as they had to provide training on a short notice. The company however responded to the challenges with a new approach that involved repackaging their DVDs. The initial rental boxes were replaces by lockable cases. Moreover, the company also resorted to technology for cutting down its costs (Gershon 2013). The company installed five high-speed machines at the sole distribution centers for automating the process of opening the case, inserting disks and thereby applying and printing store labels. In spite of all the changes made, the company could not compete with the emerging challenges of the 21st century and had to undertake a constant struggle with its competitors. However, the companys decline attributed to the increased competition that it faced from the media entertainment industry. Then there were technological advances that changed the scenario of the industry in addition to the changing preferences of the consumers. The Company also could not keep pace with the rapid growth of the new competitors and economic environment that persisted generally (Davis and Higgins 2013). In addition to this, the companys progress hindered by the increased level of debt incurred during times when the company had lower competition and higher performance. This cohesion leads to proper utilization of organizational resources without sabotage as well as sound, logical and relevant polices on how to coordinate organizational activities in a manner that would maximize the organizations’ chances of realizing their mission and vision. Cohesion among various organizational departments also leads to the sharing of information by various departments which increases the employees’ levels of understanding of how various departments work. This is very important because it enables employees to multitask, especially in times when staffs in some departments are not available. For example, the understanding of administrative issues in the organization by the head of accounting department may make him or her work on behalf of the head of the administration department when he or she is not present. Strong organizational culture enhances control, good coordination and consistency within an organization. The reason is that the employees and the management are in good terms and thus are able to agree informally on various procedures and practices without compromising the quality of services offered. This saves on time because employees implement the changes which they find necessary without having to wait for bureaucratic board meetings and discussions to approve even the slightest change in procedures or practices. Lastly, not the least, cohesive organizational culture enhances teamwork, group leadership and collaboration of the employees in various tasks. This is of crucial importance to organizations because it opens the room for employees’ creativity, innovativeness and openness to positive criticism which makes work not only enjoyable, but also enriched with a multiplicity of ideas. I would also recommend that the organization reduces the centers of power. Based on the organizational chart, it is evident that the organization has many centers of power and that is why there is poor coordination of the departments. If for example, the organization could have just one director in charge of information and communication technology, then the wrangles witnessed before would not happen again.
